Zermatt
The picturesque mountain village of Zermatt is situated below the unmistakable peak of the Matterhorn at the head of the Visp valley, surrounded by some of Europe's highest mountains. Zermatt is one of the most fashionable and best known resorts in Switzerland, it can only be reached by train as it is a traffic free village, you will need to park at Tasch.
Klein Matterhorn, the highest cable car in Switzerland takes you on a spectacular journey to the Klein Matterhorn at 3819 meters and the awesome views of this mighty pyramid shaped peak, on a clear day you can see as far as the Jungfrau and Mont Blanc. From Zermatt you can experience many possibilities traveling by cable car and cog railway; visit Lower Rothorn at 3109 meters, Gornergrat cog railway at 3135 meters, or take the Gondola to Schwarzsee at 2560 meters where there is an inviting restaurant, sun terrace and the tiny chapel of 'Mary of the Snow'.
The quaint main street of Zermatt is bustling with shops, boutiques, jewelers and mouth watering pastry and chocolate shops.
The Zermatt mountain railway offers you unlimited rides to numerous ridge paths among the web of hiking routes. Sports activities are in abundance here, hiking, biking, climbing, high altitude trekking and summer skiing are popular attractions, this is the highest summer skiing area in the Alps. No excursion to the skiing area is complete without a visit to the ice grotto beneath the mountain train station.
A trip to the Rothorn by underground funicular and gondola/cable car offers some of the best views in the area.
