Aletsch Glacier
At the foot of the Aletsch, surrounded by majestic giant mountains, is the Aletsch glacier this is the largest glacier in the Alps, covering more than 120 square kilometers in southern Switzerland. Its path descends round the south of the Jungfrau into the valley of the Upper Rhône; at its eastern extremity lays a glacier lake, Lake Märjelen to the west rises Aletschhorn whilst the Rhône River flows along the southern flank of the mountains.
These great glaciers are slowly melting due to Global Warming, on the 18th August 2007, photographer Lucas Jacobs used hundreds of naked people in a "living sculpture" on the Aletsch Glacier in a photo shoot intended to draw attention to global warming and the shrinking of the world's glaciers.
The Aletsch glacier not only offers breathtaking views of the area but also great walking through woods and meadows, as well as demanding and guided glacier and mountain tours.
